What is an Eyelid Surgery a.k.a. blepharoplasty?
An eyelid surgery also known as a blepharoplasty, is a surgical procedure to improve the appearance of the eyelids by releasing adhesions and reducing excess skin and fat from the eyelids. The procedure is usually performed for cosmetic reasons but may also be performed for functional reasons. The blepharoplasty can be performed on the upper eyelids, the lower eyelids, or both.
Why an Eyelid Surgery (blepharoplasty)?
The eyes are one of the most important features on the face. Excess skin and laxity of the eyelids are one of the chief complaints for patients seeking eyelid surgery. As skin ages, it will gradually lose its elasticity. A lack of elasticity will cause excessive skin to collect on the upper and lower eyelids making the iris and whites of the eyes less visible. This can result in an older and tired looking appearance.
A Lower Blepharoplasty involves the removal of fat deposits which are more prevalent under the eye. In addition, many times Dr. D’Souza releases adhesions and repositions fat in the lower eyelid. The lower eyelid skin may also need to be tightened to give the lid a smooth and firm appearance. Some patients that aren’t ready for a lower blepharoplasty may be recommended dermal fillers or fat grafting in the tear troughs as a temporary solution, or even as a look into the future of what a permanent procedure such a blepharoplasty, may look like.
An Upper Blepharoplasty involves the removal of excess skin and fatty tissue. While the fat deposits, loose skin, and drooping eyelids typically occur from age, this procedure can restore a more youthful, rested and refreshed appearance.
What can you expect during the blepharoplasty procedure?
The blepharoplasty is performed in the operating room. The incision is hidden in the skin crease of the eyelid for optimal camouflage after healing. All incisions will be discussed in detail with you before starting the procedure. Depending on the extent of the operation, the procedure can be performed in our private suite at the clinic, or in the operating room. Overall the procedure can take anywhere from 1-2 hours.
What can you expect after the blepharoplasty procedure?
Initial healing may include some swelling and bruising which will go away in a few days with the use of an ice pack on the eyes for 24 hours. Irritation, dry eyes or discomfort can be controlled with medication, cold compresses, and ointment. It may take a few weeks for the healing to be completed, during this time you should not wear eye makeup.
How long will the results last?
Eyelid Surgery results vary from patient to patient. The procedure is primarily aimed to achieve a younger and more alert look, however, it’s also an option for restoring vision obscured from excess sagging skin and fullness. With that said, the results of a blepharoplasty generally last for years. For some, the positive effects of the procedure are permanent which allows the patients to enjoy a lifetime of youthful looking eyes.
