Get back to your pre-baby body with a Mommy Makeover
What is a ‘Mommy Makeover’?
A ‘Mommy Makeover’ may include many different procedures. The body changes that occur following pregnancy include changes to facial skin, the tummy, labia majora and labia minora or the genital region, and the breast. A ‘Mommy Makeover’ typically includes a breast lift with enlargement and body contouring procedures including abdominoplasty and liposuction.
Following pregnancy and nursing a woman’s breasts may become more lax. Many women prefer to have a breast lift and an augmentation following pregnancy. Breast augmentations are preformed with silicone or saline breast implants. Dr. D’Souza can help you choose the exact size and shape of the breast implant that fits your body type.
The breast lift or mastopexy is performed with varying incisions depending on how much lift the patient needs. For the patient with a small amount of skin laxity, an incision around the nipple is made. For those with more skin laxity a ‘Lollipop’ technique is performed with a vertical incision. The ‘Wise’ pattern adds a horizontal incision to the procedure and is only reserved for those with a great deal of laxity. Dr D’Souza will discuss all incisions with you and tailor your procedure to your specific needs.
Abdominal contouring procedures may be necessary for those with lax abdominal or flank skin and excess fat. Liposuction is a technique that may be used in a ‘Mommy Makeover’ for those with good skin elasticity. If a patient has more excess skin and fat, the abdominoplasty a.k.a. ‘tummy tuck’ is a surgical procedure that may help excise stubborn belly fat. Pregnancy can cause the breakdown of the abdomen muscles that give a contoured figure. The tummy tuck shapes and tones your abdomen by removing the most stubborn fat on your body.
For patients who experience changes in their genital tissues after childbirth, a labiaplasty is an option. This procedure can decrease redundancy in the labia minora tissue to give the vagina a fresh, and more youthful appearance. Many women mistaken the labiaplasty for the vaginoplasty. Whereas the vaginoplasty focuses on tightening the vagina, the labiaplasty only focuses on the labia majora and labia minora.
Why have a ‘Mommy Makeover’?
Women who have been pregnant and/or have nursed their children who would like help restoring their breast, abdomen, or genital tissue are all excellent candidates for a ‘mommy makeover’. Dr. D’Souza has experience with each part of the procedure and his skills and talents can help a woman improve her body.
What can you expect during the procedure?
A ‘Mommy Makeover’ is performed in the operating room. The incisions will be discussed in detail with you before starting the procedure. To safely provide you with the best results an anesthesiologist administers anesthesia during the procedure. Following the inducement of anesthesia, the liposuction and abdominal portion of the procedure will begin. Once this portion has completed attention will be turned to the breast and genital tissue. Overall the procedure can take anywhere from 4-6 hours.
What can you expect after the procedure?
A ‘Mommy Makeover’ is a procedure that requires moderate recovery time. Patients will stay with an aftercare nurse at an outpatient facility following the surgery. We will discuss exercise and lifting restrictions at your pre-operative visit. Walking is highly encouraged after the procedure to keep blood circulating for a safe recovery. All patients need to walk flexed at the hip for the first 7 days and may stand up straight by seven days. Patients may drive at day 10. Small drains may be left in the breast and abdomen for about 7 days and a special bra and abdominal girdle will be worn for the first 2 weeks.
How long will the results last?
You will see some results immediately. However, the final results of the Tummy Tuck may take 1 year to fully develop as swelling needs time to subside. Some visible scars may remain, but the overall results will be long lasting provided that general fitness and nutritional care are maintained. It should take about 8 -12 months for the incision lines to achieve their best results.
Am I a Good Candidate?
You are a good candidate for the Tummy Tuck if:
- You have no major health problems
