Rhinoplasty, also known as a “nose job” or “nose surgery,” is a surgical procedure designed to modify or adjust the shape of your nose. Dr. D’Souza spent years dedicated to facial aesthetic surgery and rhinoplasty at the Cleveland Clinic and UCSD. At the Cleveland Clinic, he was able to study with some of the leading nasal surgeons. Dr. D’Souza specializes in both open and closed rhinoplasty approaches and tailors each surgery to the patient’s facial profile. The techniques used in rhinoplasty focus on providing a balanced, natural result that maintains or improves breathing function.
Candidates for Rhinoplasty
The best candidates for rhinoplasty are in good health, have realistic expectations, and do not smoke. Most patients do not want significant changes to their nose; they want to look like themselves after surgery. Concerns that can be addressed with rhinoplasty may include:
- A nose that is too wide or too long
- A hump or bump on the bridge of the nose
- Breathing difficulties due to enlarged turbinates inside the nose, a deviated septum, or inflamed nasal mucosa
Dr. D’Souza will examine your nose and develop a personalized surgical plan during your consultation.
Rhinoplasty Options
Rhinoplasty is performed in the operating room using general anesthesia. Once the anesthesia has been administered, the incisions will be made according to the surgical technique chosen for your procedure. All incisions will be discussed in detail with you before your surgery. Overall, rhinoplasty can take between two and three hours to complete.
Open Technique
For the technique, an incision is made on the underside of the columella (tissue that separates the nostrils). This method allows for better visualization of the inner structures of the nose, providing better accuracy during surgery. The small scar left at the base of the nose fades quickly and will be barely visible.
Closed Technique
Incisions made using the closed technique are all made within the nasal passages. This approach eliminates any visible scarring.
Recovery and Results
Rhinoplasty is a procedure that requires moderate recovery time. We will discuss restrictions during your postoperative visit. You will have a splint placed along the outside of your nose for one week and a splint inside each nostril for five days. Most people need approximately two to four weeks of recovery time before returning to normal activities.
You will see some results immediately. However, the final results of your surgery may take one year to fully develop, as swelling needs time to subside. The overall results will be long lasting.
