What is a lip lift?
A lip lift is a surgical procedure that improves visible signs of aging in the perioral region by decreasing the distance between the nose and the upper lip, rolling out the upper lip to address thinning, and exposing the upper teeth. Whereas fillers like Juvederm © and Restylane © can be used to make the lip fuller, an individual may also need a shorter lip height for a rejuvenated look.
The lip lift is designed to reduce the signs of aging that can result around the upper perioral region. The lip lift will restore the well-defined shape of the lips and mouth that has been lost over time.
What do I need to know?
The procedure improves the shape and features of the lip. The distance between the noes and upper lip increases over time causing the upper lip to thin and roll inward. This, in turn, makes the cupid’s bow shape less distinct. The use of fillers or fat grafting in these circumstances can make the lip sag even more by adding increased weight to the upper lip complex.
What to expect during the procedure
The lip lift is performed in the clinic. The incision is hidden either at the upper border of the lip or the lower border of the nose. All incisions will be discussed in detail with you before starting the procedure. The skin around the area is numbed with a local anesthetic. A concealed incision is then made and skin is removed. The incisions are then carefully closed. Overall the procedure can take anywhere from 45 minutes to 1 hour.
What to expect after the procedure
After the lip lift, the incision site will likely be covered with a small medical bandage. All bandages will be removed the following day and you will be asked to start showering regularly in the next 24 hours. Pain and discomfort can be controlled with simple over the counter medications such as Tylenol. The scars heal amazingly well and are nicely hidden.
How long will the results last?
The reported life expectancy of a lip lift is anywhere between 5 to 10 years; however, your skin quality and maintenance are important factors in the longevity of your lip lift.
