Tummy Tuck
Tummy tuck surgery, or abdominoplasty, is designed to remove excess skin and fat and repair separated abdominal muscles, which can occur for several reasons. For some, weight fluctuations or age may take a toll on the body. Pregnancy can also cause the separation of the abdominal muscles. The tummy tuck shapes and tones your abdomen by removing stubborn fat and lax skin and tightening weak muscles.
Candidates for Tummy Tuck Surgery
Patients who have achieved weight loss through diet and exercise but are struggling with excess skin or separated abdominal muscles are the best candidates for a tummy tuck. Patients should be non-smokers in good general health and have realistic expectations.
The Tummy Tuck Procedure
A tummy tuck is performed in the operating room under general anesthesia. The incision is placed between the hips at the bikini line. All incisions will be discussed in detail with you before starting the procedure. The incision will be made, and excess skin and fatty tissue will be removed. Dr. D’Souza will tighten your muscles to give you the ideal body contour, and all incisions will be carefully closed with sutures. Typically, the procedure takes between one and two hours to complete. Surgical drains will be placed in the abdominal wall for about one week afterward.
Recovery and Results
Tummy tuck surgery is a major procedure and requires a moderate recovery period. Exercise and lifting restrictions will be explained at your pre-operative visit. Walking is encouraged after the procedure to keep blood circulating for a safe recovery. Most people require approximately two to four weeks of recovery time before returning to their normal activities.
You will see some improvement immediately. However, the final results of your tummy tuck may take up to one year to fully develop as residual swelling subsides. Some visible scars may remain but should fade with time. The overall results will be long lasting, provided that general fitness and nutritional care are maintained.
