As your facial tissues age, the distance between your nose and upper lip increases, causing the upper lip to thin and roll inward, and the shape of the cupid’s bow to become less distinct. The use of fillers or fat grafting may add unnecessary weight, making the upper lip sag even more.
Lip lift surgery improves visible signs of aging around the mouth by shortening the distance between the nose and the upper lip. While injectable fillers, such as JUVÉDERM® or Restylane®, can be used to make the lip fuller, some patients may also require a lip lift for a completely rejuvenated look.
Candidates for Lip Lift Surgery
The best candidates for lip lift surgery are in good health, have realistic expectations, and do not smoke. Patients who wish to undergo lip lift surgery typically have the following concerns:
- An upper lip that has begun to sag or thin due to age
- Naturally thin lips
- A desire for more permanent correction than can be provided by injectable fillers
Dr. D’Souza will examine your lips and develop a personalized surgical plan during your consultation.
Lip Lift Procedure
Lip lift surgery is performed in the clinic using local anesthesia. The incision will be made either at the top edge of the upper lip or along the lower edge of the nose where it meets the lip. Once the incision is made, a small strip of skin is removed, shortening the lip and revealing more of the vermilion. The incisions are then carefully closed. Overall, the procedure can take between 45 minutes and one hour to complete.
Recovery and Results
After your procedure, the incision site will likely be covered with a small bandage. All surgical dressings will be removed the following day, and you will be allowed to shower after 24 hours. Pain or discomfort can be controlled with simple over-the-counter medications, such as TYLENOL®. Scars are typically very well hidden, and all scars fade with time.
The results of a lip lift usually last between five and 10 years, depending on your skin quality and other factors. However, a proper skincare and sun protection regimen will help prolong your results.
