Men with enlarged breasts, or gynecomastia, are often self-conscious about their appearance and uncomfortable in certain social situations. Gynecomastia is a condition that can be caused by a variety of factors, including medication, hormones, or genetics. Gynecomastia surgery, also known as male breast reduction, is a procedure designed to restore a flat, well-contoured appearance to the chest. The technique chosen will depend on the extent of excess fat and tissue present in the patient’s chest.
Candidates for Gynecomastia Surgery
Men who are concerned about the appearance of enlarged breasts may be interested in this procedure. Candidates should be non-smokers in good general health. If you are overweight, you may be advised to reach a healthy weight first.
The Gynecomastia Surgery Procedure
Dr. D’Souza will develop a surgical plan for you during your consultation. If excess fat is the primary concern, liposuction may be sufficient enough to reduce the size of the breasts. Surgical excision may be required if excess breast tissue is the cause of the condition. Gynecomastia surgery can be performed under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation, depending on the technique used.
If liposuction is to be performed, a small incision will be made, and a thin suctioning tube known as a cannula will be used to remove fat deposits.
If surgical excision of the breast tissue is being performed, incisions will be made around the nipple or on the chest wall. Excess breast tissue and skin will be removed, and the incisions will be closed. Overall, the procedure can take between one and two hours to complete.
Recovery and Results
Our technique involves strict attention to avoiding trauma to the breast tissue and pectoralis muscle. We also inject local medicine to numb the area over the chest wall to help decrease pain and improve comfort during recovery. In the first few days, the chest may be sore, swollen, and bruised. These symptoms should resolve within one to two weeks, and discomfort can be controlled with over-the-counter pain medications. Patients may be asked to wear a chest compression vest for several weeks to help reduce swelling and aid healing.
The results of gynecomastia surgery are typically long lasting. However, weight gain and age may affect the size and shape of your breasts over time.
