One of the most internationally popular cosmetic and body contouring procedures is breast augmentation. Breast augmentation involves surgically increasing the size and projection of the bust, typically with the use of implants. This customizable aesthetic surgery produces a more proportionate and attractive chest contour that is tailored to each patient’s unique anatomical needs. Patients who seek breast augmentation at Iconic Plastic Surgery can choose from various options designed to provide them with the results they desire.
Candidates for Breast Augmentation
Women in generally good health may consider breast augmentation if they have a realistic expectation of their results. The ideal candidates for this procedure want to correct any of the following breast imperfections:
– Breast asymmetry
-Displeasing breast shape
-Naturally small breasts
-Disproportionately small breasts
-Loss of breast volume
The Breast Augmentation Procedure
Breast augmentation is an outpatient surgery that is performed at our operating facility. An anesthesiologist will administer anesthesia during the procedure to ensure total patient comfort and safety. One of three incisions will be used, through which saline or silicone implants are inserted. All surgical details will be determined at the consultation appointment. The surgery normally takes between one and two hours to complete.
Rapid Recovery Breast Augmentation®
Dr. D’Souza developed an approach to breast augmentation that reduces the time spent in the operating room as well as the length of recovery. During a Rapid Recovery Breast Augmentation® procedure, he cauterizes any blood vessels that are damaged during the surgery, minimizing bleeding and postoperative swelling.
Incision Location
Depending on your goals and the type of implant you want, you may choose between the following incision locations for your breast augmentation:
Inframammary: incisions are placed along the breast crease, allowing Dr. D’Souza to have an optimal view of the surgical site.
Periareolar: incisions are created around the areolas so that they are camouflaged with the darker tissue. Small-to-moderately sized implants can be placed using this technique.
Transaxillary: incisions are made within the armpit, leaving the breasts free of any postoperative scarring. This technique is only appropriate for patients who opt for saline implants.
Implant Type
Breast implants come in a variety of sizes, shapes, and projections. They are composed of a silicone shell that is filled with either silicone gel or saline solution.
Saline Breast Implants
-Filled with sterile saline solution
-Versatile incision options
-Great for women with asymmetrical breasts
-FDA-approved for patients age 18 and older
Silicone Breast Implants
-Filled with cohesive silicone gel
-Ideal for patients with minimal breast tissue
-Mimic the feel of natural breast tissue
-FDA-approved for women ages 22 and older
Implant Placement
Submuscular placement involves inserting breast implants beneath the pectoral muscle. This technique produces a more natural breast slope and is best for patients with minimal natural breast tissue.
Subglandular placement involves inserting the breast implants beneath the glandular breast tissue and above the pectoral muscle. The recovery after this type of procedure is quicker than that of submuscular placement.
Recovery and Results
Because the treated area is injected with local anesthetic during the surgery, there is minimal discomfort during the initial stage of recovery. Dr. D’Souza is careful to avoid causing excessive trauma to the breast tissue and pectoralis muscle, which also helps expedite the healing process. Patients can expect some soreness in the first few days of recovery, but this can be controlled with over-the-counter medications.
Results are intended to last many years, but certain experiences can alter the appearance of the breasts over time. Subsequent pregnancies, weight fluctuations, and aging, for example, are known to change the breasts as well as other features.
