Patients who have achieved significant weight loss through diet, exercise, or gastric bypass are often left with loose folds of skin around the abdomen, thighs, and buttocks. Your skin loses elasticity as a result of being stretched. A body lift is a procedure that improves the shape and tone of the lower body by removing excess skin and underlying fat and is the procedure of choice for patients who have lost a significant amount of weight.
Candidates for Body Lift
Patients who have undergone a major weight loss transformation are ideal candidates for a body lift. However, this is a complex procedure, so you must meet certain criteria to be eligible. Candidates should be non-smokers in good general health who have been able to maintain a stable body weight. Additional criteria will be discussed with you during your consultation.
The Body Lift Procedure
The body lift is performed in the operating room using general anesthesia. The incision length depends on the amount and location of excess skin to be removed. Once the anesthesia has been administered, the incision will be made, and excess skin and fat are removed. The remaining underlying tissues will be used to support your newly contoured shape. Once the surgery is complete, the incisions will be closed with sutures. Overall, the procedure can take anywhere from four to eight hours. Some patients may require an overnight hospital stay. Surgical drains will be left in place for about a week to help prevent fluid build-up.
Recovery and Results
Body lift surgery is a major procedure and requires significant recovery time. We will discuss exercise and lifting restrictions during your pre-operative appointment. We encourage patients to begin light walks after surgery to keep blood circulating and help prevent blood clots. Most people require approximately four to six weeks of recovery time before returning to normal activities and six to eight weeks before exercising.
You will see some results immediately. However, the final results of your body lift may take one year or more to develop, as swelling needs time to subside. Some visible scars may remain, but the overall results will be long lasting, provided that you continue to lead a healthy lifestyle.
