From Dr. D’Souza: “I firmly believe that to strive to perfect your passion is the pinnacle of human ability. It consists of a multitude of elements: determination, ability, grit, and competence. Not all surgeons attain this summit.
I have encountered amazing mentors and dazzling surgeons from the top institutions in the world. Each had his strengths and each had his faults. Some excelled as teachers while others proved to be the innovators of their era. I tried to glean as much as I could from each one of them. However, I have learned that one thing could never be taught – the artistic nature of the surgery. Whereas one can learn a procedure only the true masters take a simple procedure and mold it into something special.
And while I have seen the best at some of the greatest institutions in the world – the Cleveland Clinic, Johns Hopkins University, and the University of California, I still work every day to attain this “It” quality to provide the absolute highest level of care to my patients.”
The two main elements of Dr. D’Souza’s surgical philosophy are patient selection and journey for perfection. During his training, Dr. D’Souza developed knowledge and surgical acumen from many varied sources.
Patient Selection – Some surgeons will operate on anyone. Dr. D’Souza’s surgical plan is carefully crafted in concert with the goals and desires of his patient. Both the patient and Dr. D’Souza’s vision must remain in harmony. If they are not, Dr. D’Souza feels he has not surpassed his patient’s expectations. Dr. D’Souza turns down surgery if he cannot attain this agreement. While some may scoff at this notion, Dr. D’Souza sees this as maturation in his surgical judgment.
Perfection— with each procedure, Dr. D’Souza has a set plan that he attempts to precisely execute. The chase for perfection is what keeps him in steady pursuit of this goal and Dr. D’Souza does not allow for any deviations.
