What is Gynecomastia?
Enlarged male breasts may be caused by a variety of reasons including medication, hormones, or genetics. These things may all lead to increased breast tissue or fat in the chest wall of men. When done well, scars can be kept to a minimum and the recovery period can be simple and easy. The goal of this operation is to eliminate enlarged male breasts and restore a flat well contoured appearance of the chest.
What do I need to know?
Dr. D’Souza will plan what is required during your revision operation. If you are overweight, you may be advised to attempt weight loss first. In most cases, liposuction or small incisions around the nipple border may be made to keep scarring at a minimum. However, if you have too much breast tissue, you may need to have resection of skin to produce a firm, tight shape.
What should I expect during the surgery for Gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia surgery is performed in the operating room. All incisions will be discussed in detail with you before starting the procedure. To safely provide you with the best results an anesthesiologist will administer anesthesia during the procedure. Following the inducement of anesthesia, precise incisions are made around the nipple or on the chest wall. Breast tissue and/or skin may be removed by excision. Liposuction is a helpful adjunct that may allow for less scarring and may allow for a retraction of the skin envelope. Overall the procedure can take anywhere from 1-2 hours.
What to expect after the surgery for Gynecomastia
Our technique involves strict attention to avoiding trauma to the breast tissue and pectoralis muscle. We also inject local medicine to numb the area over the chest wall. This technique decreases pain and enhances recovery. In the first few days, your breasts will be sore, however, discomfort can be controlled with over the counter pain medications. Physical contact should be avoided until your breasts are no longer sore. You may be asked to wear a chest compression vest for several weeks after the surgery. This helps mold the breast into a pleasing shape and keeps swelling at a minimum. After the recovery stage, you’ll be able to enjoy your new body image for years to come.
How long will the results last?
Your results may not last forever. Weight gain and age may affect the size and shape of your breasts over time.
