What is a Breast Lift?
A woman’s breasts change shape and contour due to pregnancy, breastfeeding and normal aging. As a woman ages, the skin and breast tissue lose elasticity causing the breast to droop and sag (ptosis). Dr. D’Souza’s breast lift techniques are focused on restoring the breasts to a more natural, perky shape. A breast lift can also be combined with a breast augmentation procedure to restore volume loss.
What do I need to know?
A breast lift, or mastopexy is performed with varying incisions depending on how much lift the patient needs. For the patient with a small amount of skin laxity, an incision around the nipple is made. For those with more skin laxity a ‘lollipop’ technique is performed with a vertical incision. The ‘Wise’ pattern adds a horizontal incision to the procedure and is only reserved for those with a great deal of laxity. Dr. D’Souza will discuss all incisions with you and tailor your procedure to your specific needs. During your consultation, Dr. D’Souza will take several measurements to determine which incision style is right for you.
What to expect during the Breast Lift
The breast lift is performed in the operating room. All incisions will be discussed in detail with you before starting the procedure. To safely provide you with the best results an anesthesiologist will administer anesthesia during the procedure. Following the inducement of anesthesia, the incisions are made and breast tissue and skin are removed. The nipple may be repositioned for a more aesthetically pleasing look. Overall the procedure can take anywhere from 1-3 hours.
What to expect after the Breast Lift
Our technique involves strict attention to avoiding trauma to the breast tissue and pectoral muscles. We also inject a local anesthetic to numb the area over the chest wall. This technique decreases pain and enhances recovery. In the first few days, your breasts will be sore, however, discomfort can mostly be controlled with over the counter pain medications. Physical contact should be avoided until your breasts are no long sore. After the recovery stage, you’ll be able to enjoy your new body image for years to come.
How long will the results last?
Your results may not last forever. Pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight loss, and age may affect the size and shape of your breasts over time.
Am I a Candidate?
You may be a candidate for a breast lift if you’ve thought about the following:
- Correcting or improving uneven breast shape or size
- A desire for perkier breasts that are more proportionate to the overall body appearance
- Correct uneven size, volume and shape of breasts following pregnancy or weight loss
