What is a Breast Augmentation?
A breast augmentation is a procedure that increases the bust to produce a more proportional, aesthetically pleasing chest contour. Over 330,000 women underwent breast augmentation procedures in 2015 alone, making it one of the most popular cosmetic surgeries to date. Breast Augmentation is a cosmetic surgery procedure to increase breast size and enhance breast shape for adult women of all ages depending on health history.
What do I need to know?
Breast implants come in a variety of shapes, sizes and implant materials. Furthermore, there are some key choices to make before opting into a breast augmentation surgery. These are including but not limited to: implant placement under or over the muscle (subglandular or glandular), breast implant size (CC’s), and location of incision (areola, transaxillary, or inframammary fold).
The incision used in a breast augmentation is of the utmost importance and requires a highly skilled surgeon to perform correctly, such as Dr. D’Souza. Incisions can be placed around the nipple (areola), in the armpit (transaxillary), or under the breast (inframammary fold). These incision placements are designed to provide a camouflaged scar, and also must be chosen accordingly to fit the chosen implant (saline or silicone) so it can be inserted correctly.
The inframammary incision, which is placed under the breast fold, is the most common option used and provides a scar that is both small and difficult to visualize after the surgery. The inframammary incision is the most common because it is mainly used when a patient requests a silicone implant.
Three major companies sell breast implants: Allergan, Sientra, and Mentor. These three companies each offer FDA-approved silicone and saline implants.
During your consultation, Dr. D’Souza will take several measurements to determine the size and type of breast implant that will fit your breast the best. The measurements are very accurate and predictable and allow the exact size (CC’s) to be selected with you during your consultation.
What is the difference between Saline and Silicone?
Saline and Silicone breast implants both have their own advantages that patients should consider. One of your biggest decisions is choosing between silicone gel and saline implants. Silicone implants have increased popularity over the past decade and offer a more natural feel with an improved breast contour. Some women also prefer saline implants particularly if they are under the age of 22 years old (the FDA does not allow silicone implants in women younger than 22). Saline implants are great for women who have slight asymmetry in their breasts that they want corrected, whereas, the vast majority of women pick silicone breast implants to help them achieve the ideal breast augmentation result.

What to expect during the Breast Augmentation
The breast augmentation is performed in the operating room. All incisions will be discussed in detail with you before starting the procedure. To safely provide you with the best results an anesthesiologist will administer anesthesia during the procedure. Following the inducement of anesthesia, a specific pocket is created for the implant. The placement of the breast implant is done with strict adherence to sterile techniques. Overall the procedure can take anywhere from 1-2 hours.
What to expect after the Breast Augmentation
Our technique involves strict attention to avoiding trauma to the breast tissue and pectoralis muscle. We also inject local medicine to numb the area over the chest wall. This technique decreases pain and enhances recovery. In the first few days, your breasts will be sore, however, discomfort can be controlled with over the counter pain medications. Physical contact should be avoided until your breasts are no long sore. After the recovery stage, you’ll be able to enjoy your new body image for years to come.
How long will the results last?
Your results may not last forever. Pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight loss, and age may affect the size and shape of your breasts over time. Silicone gel breasts typically have a life expectancy of between 10 to 20 years, while saline generally have between 4 to 10 years.
Am I a Candidate?
You may be a candidate if you’ve thought about the following:
- Correcting or improving uneven breast shape or size
- Wanting larger breasts that are more proportionate to the overall body appearance
- Correcting the size, volume and shape of breasts following pregnancy or weight loss
